The actor goes back to her southern springs for the gothic chiller The Beguiled. She talks about ripening pains, stage mothers and the rapture of playing the bad girl

Once upon a season, a young ingenue took a excursion across Los Angeles to meet Hollywoods equivalent of the large-hearted bad wolf. The contentious Danish director Nicolas Winding Refn was casting the lead role in The Neon Demon, a horrific fable of the fashion industry, and feared that wholesome Elle Fanning might not be tough enough to stay the course. So Refn expected her out of the blue if she conceived she was beautiful a few questions deliberately intended to trip her up and construct her wriggle. The tactic succeeded. But only up to a point.

In the end I said yes, Fanning remembers. I said that yes, I did visualize I was beautiful. Because I knew it was a test, he attempted to get me to crack. And I thought that this was what I should say, what the specific characteristics “ve said”. And it was right, it labor, because I got the part.

It was the chasten answer for Jesse, the pristine heroine of The Neon Demon, who floated her practice through an LA inferno of vampiric runway frameworks. But perhaps it says something about 19 -year-old Fanning as well, who has wasted a lifetime in Hollywood and managed to emerge similarly unsullied. Its not that I dont anticipate dreadful things can happen to young actors in Hollywood, she insists. I know they surely do. Ive merely been very fortunate that they havent happened to me.

We meet inside a beachfront hotel during the course of its Cannes film festival, where sunlight jumps off the marble walls and motorists toot their cornets in wall street down below. Fanning, it transpires, has been in township all week, attending a variety of contests in various categories of clothes. Her display of stylists refer to themselves as team unicorn, as though they are administering to the needs of some mythic brute. Today, they have employed her in a sheer dress of such perfect whiteness that one quite fears for the safety and security; a sigh of breeze might irreparably discolour it. Dont worry, a publicist sigh in the actors ear. We can get you changed before you go to lunch.

Fanning property her first acting chore at the age of 2 and has been working steadily ever since. She points out that her recent cinema, The Beguiled, is actually her first character as young adults; the first in which she was not required to have her mum accompany her on the prepare. So that acquires it a very special film for me, she mentions. It was a smell of impunity. Figuring it out. Developing up. She gestures down at her 5ft 10 in chassis. Emotionally , not physically. Im tall enough as it is.

In The Beguiled, Fanning has even moved away from playing the innocent to playing the wolf. Sofia Coppolas film is a juicy southern melodrama, covered in spanish moss and thrumming with sex strain. Nicole Kidman stars as the upright headmistress of a Virginia girls seminary; Colin Farrell as the wounded civil crusade Union soldier who initially thinks he has found heaven. Fanning, as matches her freshly adult status, lends firecracker reinforce as Alicia, the oldest of the girls, who steals away from the dinner table to flower a kiss on the soldiers mouth. We can show him some real southern hospitality, she coos to her friends, shortly before the cinema tars towards outright blood horror.

Fanning cherished constructing The Beguiled, and her devotion is virulent. She talks in a downpour, like a river in slew, merrily abounding the banks of individuals question to the point where I am allured to jettison them altogether. She mentions she basked playing the bad girl, although is Alicia really so bad? She is just accepted and hormonal; anyone that age might have reacted the same way in her situation. Fanning adds that she adored acting alongside Kidman, who has been her idol for years; Moulin Rouge is one of her all-time favourite cinemas. Likewise, shes tall. And Im tall, she mentions. Tall actresses are few and far between. Theres Uma Thurman, Nicole Kidman, I think thats about it, so weve got to stick together.

Most of all, it seems, she affection working with Coppola, who as writer-director plots to throw a cunning feminist spin on Don Siegels original 1971 word-painting. Fanning specifically provides that she last cooperated with Coppola on the refined, minor-key Somewhere back in 2010, when she played the sugary, mournful daughter to Stephen Dorffs car-crash Hollywood actor. So this film was like coming full circle; an amazing ordeal, she gushes. Sofia has this behavior of making that, like, comes right from her feeling, she answers. And its a very elegant, elegant lane of working and shes very respected and shes had all this great success, but what I admire is that shes done it very tastefully, with goodnes and geniu and ingenuity. Shes genuinely developed a stamp and you cant recreate it. And this film surely has her mold, but its different, very, as they were blood in this movie, which is crazy, right? For her, right, its crazy. She gulps a breather and collects herself. She tells: But she does it with elegance.

Fanning was born in smalltown Georgia, the child of southern Baptists, but took off for the west coast when she was barely out of nappies. In a sense, she explains, the family was simply going on the coattails of her older sister, Dakota, who was already assuring capacities alongside Sean Penn and Reese Witherspoon and has since gone on to forge a successful busines of her own. You can see her in Twilight, War of the Worlds and Kelly Reichardts excellent Night Moves.

The way Fanning Jr tells it, she and Dakota were always playing make-believe in their bedroom. Playing was simply an extension of that. Even when I was really young, I always knew it was acting. I entail, I did a movie announced The Door in the Floor with Jeff Bridges when I was four and I always knew it was just pretend that Jeff Bridges wasnt really my papa. And yeah, I know its a task, I know that its serious. But its too about dressing up and pretending.

Its an mentality that appears to have acted her well. On screen, right from the beginning, Fanning has been a spookily nuanced musician, possessed of a quiet ferocity that rather belies her off-screen burbles. She played a stoic adventurer in JJ Abramss Super 8 and rustled up a heart-piercing recital as an angst-ridden British teen in the acclaimed Ginger and Rosa. I desired her as Jesse, the aspiring young pattern in Refns sugar-frosted fright prove, but I also affection her as the chaste best friend in Mike Millss 20th Century Women. Fanning grew up in public and she has constituted it search painless although she is quick-witted to contend this was not always the case.

When I was 12, I changed seven inches in a year. And it hurt every day. On Somewhere, I thrived two shoe sizings during filming. And I would pass out a lot because I hadnt transformed into my organization. So that wasnt a great time. It definitely wasnt painless.

If she weighs that as sting, I guess she got off very lightly. I am not even sure I fairly believe her. Isnt the life of a Hollywood child star meant to be a DayGlo gothic nightmare, a kind of prolonged dress rehearsal for Whatever Appeared to Baby Jane? I want to hear about the shrieking kids at the open-call throws; the grip mothers who plunder their teenagers bank account. I have read that Fannings mother threw in her position, moved the family to LA. Please tell me she has been pushy and controlling at times?

Fanning, though, is having none of it. Mothers in the industry get a really bad name, she replies. Which is so not fair, because my mother is amazing and she sacrificed so much with her life out in Georgia, which she gave up to do this beautiful act which is following a childs fantasy. So I detest that scene. I detest that theory. Without my mother, I wouldnt be here, I wouldnt even “know what i m thinking” I was doing, perhaps. I had the luxury of knowing what I want to do because of her.

It strikes me that the logic of this last statement jeopardies undercutting her dispute, but never mind. Time is flowing short and Fanning is back on a roll; she is the river in flock. She tells me that she comes from their own families of contestants. Her mum played tennis, her dad played baseball and her maternal granddad was a quarterback for the Philadelphia Eagles.

I have the plays drive, she pronounces. Its in my blood; I cant help it. Performers and athletes are similar, I see. You give a point for yourself; youre ready for certain challenges. You prepare for the equal or youre getting ready for the persona. The adrenaline when you have a big scene to do is huge. I felt that behavior when I was becoming Somewhere. I felt that method when I did Ginger and Rosa, when I was 13 thats perhaps the character that indicated “the worlds largest” for me, because I originated as an actress on that movie and I detected much older at the end of it. I had a British accent in it. I pigment my whisker crimson, when I had always been blonde, and so I didnt feel like myself at all. Something clicked. I envisaged: Oh, this is something that behaving is supposed to feel like.

Her southern heritage is important to her, but these days she suspects she has left it far behind. Fannings grandmother still lives with the family and is a terminated southern belle, exceedingly dense accent. Her parents, more, still sometimes pine for home. She shakes her front. But LA is my home; Im a California girl. Having pate west to seek her fortune, she has now staked her affirm. The present is rosy-cheeked and the future searches golden.

Fanning was explained that the initial move to Hollywood was seen in the spirit of undertaking. It was a enjoyable family recreation; not meant to last. My sister says that its like continues to be on this trip to LA and that one day soon well all “il be going back” to Georgia. But its been, like, 16 years now. And I say to her: Seem, this is us, this is our life. I say to her: Review, we are never going back.

The Beguiled is out 14 July .
