John Mahoney passed away at the age 77 on Sunday.

His manager confirmed the sad bulletin that the Frasier star had guided while under hospice care at his home in Chicago.

Though his accent would never betray it, Mahoney was born in Blackpool, England. He didn’t move to the U.S. until he was 19 and didn’t start behaving until “hes been” 37.

He encountered success for decades, with big-hearted personas in acclaimed movies Moonstruck, Say Anything, and Primal Fear and a lately recurring capacity on TV Land’s Hot In Cleveland.

But he will always be remembered as Marty Crane, the winsome but cantankerous father-god of Frasier and Niles, for which he was nominated for Emmys and Golden Globes twice each and even acquired a SAG Award from his fellow actors.

Mahoney never married or had any children.
